Disco makes litter picking fun for kids
A fun new Kidz’ Club initiative introduced last week saw local children picking up litter to the sounds of popular music.
The Mini Disco Litter Pickers met for the first time last Friday, April 8.
After donning their hi-vis jackets and with the help of parents and grandparents, the enthusiastic group made light work of tidying up the Stalmine Road gardens
Music on the agenda, helping to make the event more of a pleasure than a chore for the youngsters, included Follow the Sun by Xavier Rudd, Lost Boy by Ruth B, and Dance Monkey by Tones and I.
Following the activity, the children were rewarded for their efforts with a choice of toys, including a mix of indoor and outdoor games, provided by MPAC Arts and Crafts Shop.
The fun continued with some games after which snacks were provided before the children headed off to start their Easter break school holidays.
One of the children who kindly gave up her free time to help tidy up the environment for the good of the community was Amelia McFadyen, 7. Her mum, Yvonne, said: “I think it’s really good. It’s great to get the kids to look after the community – teaching them not to drop litter and pick it up instead.
“Most of the kids these days just throw their litter wherever they are. It gets them off the phones and computers as well and into the fresh air and doing something good.”
The Mini Disco Litter Pickers will take place once a month on a Friday evening at 5pm – the next event will be on May 6.
On other weeks, Kids Club activities will include ‘Bbq and Crafts’, ‘Outdoor Fun’, and ‘Treasure Hunt and Nature’.
